Mathieu Boilard

Founder, owner and president

M. Boilard obtained his bachelor’s degree in Biology at the faculté des sciences et génie de l’Université Laval focussing on animal physiology, cell and molecular biology of the reproductive system and the vertebrate embryo. Then, he completed a master’s degree and a doctorate at the Centre de Recherche en Biologie de la Reproduction also at l’Université Laval. His work focuses on the events occurring just prior to fertilization, in particular, the biochemical tools that the female genital tract uses to conduct spermatozoa to help them survive and prepare for fertilization. After 9 years of university studies, he became a specialist in the cell biology regulating mammalian fertilization and, in particular, the cell biology of spermatozoa.

After that, he was hired at the University of Massachusetts Medical School for a short period to work at identifying new proteins involved in mouse fertilization. He came back to Quebec and obtained a fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools addressing bovine fertility, which is probably the best reproductive system research model for humans.

During the next four years, he worked as a researcher within this industry to which fertility issues are of monumental importance. His work constantly involved the use of clinical methodologies in order to refine research results and translate them into tangible practical diagnostic tools. This process is called “transfer”.

The idea for Nasci came from his growing interest in the clinical training of his wife, Dr. Lyne Massicotte, clinical biochemist. In fact, it became increasingly obvious to him that the rigorous clinical control methodologies used in medical laboratories to diagnose a wide variety of health issues are limited when it comes to medical evaluation of semen. After 15 years of academic and applied research, he realised that the technologies used so far in this field can be updated using the knowledge that was earned through his research and that of many others during this period.

In July 2011, after nine months of “gestation”, Nasci Biologie Médicale Inc. was founded and since then, M. Boilard has been working full time at fulfilling the mission that constitutes the “ raison d’être” of this business.

M. Boilard’s work has been reported in many peer-reviewed oral or written scientific communications and some of them are freely available on the internet.

Research

Nasci Biologie Médicale Inc. is actively conducting several research projects on human fertility. Because of that, our laboratory is constantly seeking sperm donors in order to continuously improve the analyses offered and to develop new ones for the future.
