Fertility spemogram, why do we have to run? (Part 1)
Today’s article will discuss about fertility spermograms.
Many patients who visit us for their fertility spermogram ask about why it is so important to bring their sample to the laboratory so quickly.
During the fertility spermogram analysis, each result has to be compared to what would be considered “normal” results. These “normal” results are called “reference values”. These measures taken during the fertility spermogram analysis are influenced by the delay between the ejaculation and the analysis itself. Therefore, in order to do a valid comparison between the results of a patient and reference values, pre-analytic timing has to be respected.
Then why isn’t it possible to establish the fertility spermogram reference values three (3) hours after the ejaculation? This way, patients who want to undergo the fertility spermogram would have up to three hours to bring their sample to the laboratory. This would allow them to do the sample at home and there would still be plenty of time to drive even if their residence is a bit far from the laboratory. This is the question that we will answer in a future article. Stay tuned!
